From Feta Containers to Full-Fledged Studio: A Mosaic Journey

Every artist’s story has a beginning. Mine? It started with a pair of nippers from a big-box home store, some scraps of glass (thanks to a friend who had a friend who taught glass art at a local high school), and a stack of empty feta cheese containers. Yes—feta: the gateway dairy to mosaic addiction.
My “studio” was tucked next to the elliptical machine and weight bench in the back of our basement, and my storage system was 100% Greek salad chic. Fast forward to today, and the space looks a bit different: shelves full of substrates, walls lined with tools, drawers that (mostly) stay organized, and enough glass to qualify as a small stained glass sanctuary. But you know what? The joy of creating hasn’t changed a bit.
Whether you're working from a folding table in the laundry room or a dedicated art studio, the magic of mosaics doesn’t depend on square footage. You only need a handful of tesserae, a little curiosity, and something inflexible to glue things to - and maybe a couple of Band-Aids.
So if you’re just starting out—or thinking about it—don’t wait until you have the “perfect” space. Mosaics have a way of meeting you where you are. And who knows? Your feta containers might be the start of something beautiful.
